The first official reported sighting of Mothman happened when two young couples from Point Pleasant were driving down the road near the abandoned tnt munitions plant from WWII. The couples reported to police to have seen a large black creature that was built like a tall, lean, muscular man but with a ten foot wing span and giant glowing red eyes. They claimed it was standing on the side of the road and when they tried to drive away from the creature it flew after them making a screeching sound until they got to the city limits of Point Pleasant.
Over the next few days more people would come forward to say that they had seen the creature the newspaper had named "Mothman". One of these sightings came from two volunteer firefighters who claimed to have seen a "large bird with red eyes".
Even more people would come forward as time went on. A local contractor named Newell Partridge claimed to have seen an animal in a nearby field and when he turned his flashlight toward it, the animal's eyes glowed bright red from the light "like bicycle reflectors".
One of the most famous sightings of Mothman happened the day before and the morning of the collapse of the Silver Bridge. It was the most fatal bridge collapse in modern history, killing 46 people and injuring at least 8 people. Many say Mothman either caused the horrible disaster or was a warning of the tragedy that was to come.
